Yellowdig Raises Additional Funding from Two New York City VCs

Philadelphia, September, 2016 Philadelphia — Yellowdig, a SaaS provider of a leading social learning platform, today announced investment from two different New York City VC funds - QB1 Ventures and Rosecliff Ventures. The investment is led by Alex Swieca of QB1 Ventures, and by Michael Murphy of Rosecliff Ventures.

Shaunak Roy, Founder and CEO of Yellowdig, said, "I am excited to have Alex Swieca and Mike Murphy backing us to shape the future of education. Yellowdig is rapidly signing long-term contracts with many top US universities and has a very healthy sales pipeline. This additional investment from QB1 and Rosecliff will be used to accelerate business development and to further build out our technology platform."

Northwestern University, one of America’s leading universities and one of Yellowdig's early clients, recently released a video touting their positive experiences with Yellowdig. Students, staff, and faculty are using Yellowdig to create a social learning experience, engaging students, and empowering staff and faculty to serve their students in ways they never thought possible. Following on its transformative success at Northwestern and at other top universities, Yellowdig aims to rapidly expand its reach to many of the top 100 US universities.

Talpion Fund Management, the major backer of QB1 Ventures, is led by veteran hedge fund investor Henry Swieca. Henry Swieca said, "We are in the first half of a technological shift in how we educate our students. Yellowdig’s current and large potential customer base illustrates universities' desire to integrate technology with learning." Henry previously co-founded Highbridge Capital Management, a $25 billion multi-strategy alternative investment management firm, which was acquired by JPMorgan Chase in 2009.

Michael Murphy said, "As a father of six children, education is very important to me. I believe strongly in the need for an innovative educational system. The children of today should be able to benefit from recent advances in technology. While technology is growing at a rapid rate, we need to ensure that the same advances are showing up in classrooms. Yellowdig has shown the promise of improving the way students learn in the classroom. Our goal is to work alongside Shaunak and the Yellowdig team to bring this new technology to students and teachers." Michael is the Founder & CEO of Rosecliff Capital, a fully diversified investment firm and Rosecliff Ventures, a venture capital firm. Murphy is a proud investor and supporter for educational focused startups. Recently, Murphy has been invited to help launch and act as a mentor at NYU's latest startup accelerator program, StartED. His duties consist of mentoring and advising early stage entrepreneurs in the EdTech community. Murphy is also one of the founding partners at CSNYC's Computer Science For All, a 10-year, $80 million plan.

According to Alex Swieca, founder and managing partner of QB1 Ventures, "We are always striving to identify companies and management teams that are positioned to capture future market trends. As a recent graduate from the University of Michigan, I would have loved to use Yellowdig’s platform to engage in course material during class lectures as well as more seamlessly collaborate with my peers."

With this investment, Yellowdig will add a New York City office and has added Akiba Covitz to its senior management team, as Head of Business Development. Akiba previously served as associate dean and a member of the faculty at Harvard Law School, as vice president for university partnerships at edX, the online learning company, and as senior vice president at Academic Partnerships, a leading online program management provider.

Alex and Michael will join Yellowdig’s Board of Observers with this investment. Previous Yellowdig investors include SRI Capital and 500 Startups.

Shaunak founded Yellowdig in 2014 to follow his passion for education technologies, after almost a decade of progressive senior level roles in management consulting and corporate America. Shaunak holds a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay) and two graduate degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Northwestern and Yellowdig Form Innovation Partnership

Philadelphia, July, 2016 Yellowdig, a SaaS provider of leading social learning software, today announced it has signed a 3 year Innovation Partnership with Northwestern University.

Yellowdig and Northwestern will be working collaboratively to provide innovative Natural Language Processing for discussion analysis and new social network data visualization approaches to enhance learning and teaching, faculty-to-student interaction, and peer-to-peer knowledge communities.

"This is an important milestone for Yellowdig. This strategic partnership with a world renowned University will be the springboard for us to build the next generational learning platform that is deeply rooted in data science and pedagogy", says Shaunak Roy, Founder & CEO, Yellowdig.

Northwestern piloted the Yellowdig Learning App during the 2015-2016 academic year. During the year, more than 100 courses/learning communities comprising of over 2500 professors and students from across the university have used Yellowdig, who collectively have shared more than 8,300 learning stories and 26,000 comments & votes on the platform. The pilot was initially part of a Digital / Online Grant awarded to Medill Assistant Professor Dan Gruber who began using the tool for teaching in three of his classes before the campus-wide pilot began. "Having for the first time, student course level social interaction data, allows Northwestern to explore and experiment in new areas of teaching research, which ultimately will allow students to learn more and for faculty to be more effective in their teaching," says Dr. Gruber.

"The work with Yellowdig is fostering experiments at Northwestern in hybrid courses that offer the best experiences of both worlds of brick-and-mortar classrooms with increased online engagement among our student learning communities. We're encouraged by the work that is underway in improving student learning outcomes and in creating expanded opportunities for learning community development", observed Bob Taylor, Northwestern IT's Senior Director for academic and research technologies. "We're pleased to see this relation deepen between Northwestern educators and developers with Yellowdig engineers.

"The work so far has focused on how to leverage both a network model (for discussion structure) and natural language processing (to surface discussion topics). "By working in close collaboration with insightful faculty and engaged students, we are accruing direct insight into how to use discussion network analysis for learning and what data visualizations are most useful for class discussion and why," says Bill Parod, Software Architect in Academic & Research Technologies, Northwestern Information Technology. An online poster describing this collaboration and the "Yellowdig Viz" app is available here: http://sites.northwestern.edu/teachx2016/2016/01/26/gru/

Collaborations, such as this with faculty, students, staff, and Yellowdig encourage campus discussion and involvement with the opportunities learning analytics and visualization offer. To broadcast the availability of these tools and make their use in courses easy, Northwestern has also created a Learning App "store" where Northwestern faculty can peruse Northwestern apps and select them into their courses with a single click. "Yellowdig Viz" is prominent among the inaugural set of learning apps offered there. Site: http://learningapps.northwestern.edu

"We very much appreciate our collaboration with Yellowdig and look forward to that collaboration widening to include other Yellowdig schools, as the community evolves common practices and architectures for leveraging learning data, especially when provided by engaging learning tools such as Yellowdig. " - Parod

Today, more than 18 million teachers and students from more than 1,600 institutions use the Canvas LMS.

The Alliance Partnership Program allows the Canvas sales force to now field initial customer inquiries regarding Yellowdig and then provide its customer a seamless handoff to Yellowdig’s customer success team for detailed handling. Yellowdig is available through the EduAppCenter (https://www.eduappcenter.com/), an app library that allows teachers, administrators and students to install third-party apps easily right within Canvas.

Using Yellowdig, instructors have a completely new, simple and fun way for students to develop and share ideas, insights and critical thinking amongst peers, while deepening and broadening their course knowledge on a daily basis.

“Yellowdig is working with Instructure to make it easier for instructors to focus on teaching and learning through Facebook-like collaboration rather than on piecing together external non-FERPA compliant software to enhance student engagement outside the classroom,” said Melissa Loble, Vice President of Partners and Programs at Instructure.

“We are excited to partner with Instructure as we share a deep common purpose. Yellowdig is making significant traction with institutions that are intensely focused on delivering high social presence between faculty and students and Instructure demonstrates that same commitment,” said Scott Barnette, Yellowdig executive vice president of sales. “This partnership marks a significant milestone, reflecting the growing awareness of Yellowdig’s value proposition as a key enabler for a much more natural learning experience.”

Northwestern University Innovates in the Classroom with Yellowdig

Philadelphia, September, 2015 » Yellowdig, the leading Social Learning and Analytics software for Education Learning Management Systems (LMS), announced today that it has signed a contract with Northwestern University. The Institution signed up to the software-as-a-service upon completing a faculty evaluation pilot process which was led by Daniel Gruber, Assistant Professor in Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications and Kellogg School of Management (Courtesy).

"Linking academic frameworks to current events is a central goal in my courses. My initial intention to pilot Yellowdig was to increase engagement and learning in the classes that I teach," explained Gruber. "I was excited to try Yellowdig because of its easy-to-use interface and integration into the Canvas Learning Management System. The pilot I did in the spring 2015 quarter, which was supported by a Digital / Online Grant from the Office of the Provost and Faculty Distance Learning Workgroup here at Northwestern, was very well received by the students across three classes in the Medill School."

Northwestern Information Technology was encouraged by the positive feedback from the students and put together this opportunity for faculty and learning communities throughout the University to use the tool. "During my collaboration with Yellowdig and Northwestern Information Technology, I have discovered the vast amounts of data that the platform generates. This abundance of information allows for data-driven decisions for teaching and has opened up a stimulating new research frontier around learning analytics which I am eager to explore," added Professor Gruber. "We are excited and looking forward to continuing our pioneering student level analytics-based relationship with Northwestern," said Scott Barnette, EVP Yellowdig.

HigherEd institutions like Northwestern are becoming increasingly aware that the Yellowdig platform provides not only a far better student engagement platform, but also a way for them to fundamentally research new Teaching and Learning strategies. However, Yellowdig is not just about the student experience or enabling teaching and learning research. "We are squarely aimed at helping Instructors to reclaim time spent on unproductive tasks --through the use of auto- grading, grade book integration and social network analytics dashboards," Barnette added.

Yellowdig launches Auto-grading and LMS Gradebook Integration

Philadelphia, August, 2015 » Today Yellowdig, the leading Instructor–to-Student(s) connectivity software for Higher Education Learning Management Systems (LMS), launched its new Auto- Grading and LMS Gradebook Integration within its Private Social Learning and Analytics Platform.

Student course participation on the platform is tracked and synced with the LMS Gradebook through a fully automatic process --a process which is customizable by the instructor.

Ilya Braude, CTO of Yellowdig, says, “We remain committed to constant innovation of our platform. This latest release marks another evolution in the platform’s ability to seamlessly meld into the natural flow that students and faculty expect today. Our previously released mobile apps ignited excitement among students, and now today Gradebook Integration is igniting excitement among faculty. We continue to execute on our unique platform development strategy which is enabling innovative instructional design practices at the instructor level.”

“It’s unbelievable just how much work instructors are required to do. They are incredibly overloaded -- and increasingly more so. We took serious note of their pain point. It caused us to ask ourselves, ‘What if we design in features that allow instructors to reclaim time spent on unproductive tasks? For example, what if we automate some of the instructor’s time consuming tasks and activities related to their course setup, course execution, and course administration, while at the same time significantly increasing their student in-course engagement?” added, Scott Barnette, EVP of Sales & Marketing at Yellowdig.

Yellowdig Launches Classroom Engagement Platform at the Academy of Management Sciences Conference in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA - Yellowdig is extremely excited to be launching the public beta of its classroom engagement platform at the 2014 Academy of Management (AOM) Conference in Philadelphia from August 1st-5th. The Academy of Management Annual Meeting is the premier conference for more than 10,000 students, academics, scholars, and professionals in the scholarly management and organization space.

Yellowdig was founded by MIT and IIT graduates, Shaunak Roy and Ravindra Jaju whose vision is to transform the way we learn in the classroom and beyond. Yellowdig is a mix between a social network and a scholastic repository, like Reddit for the classroom that every college and university can benefit from. The platform helps increase students’ knowledge of current affairs related to coursework, dramatically increase classroom engagement, drive collaboration and streamline communication.

At www.yellowdig.com, you can see a video of Kartik Hosanagar, Associate Professor of Internet Commerce at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In the video, Prof. Hosanagar discusses the value that Yellowdig brings to his classroom.

“Use of social media is on the rise in higher education. According to a survey done by researchers from Babson College and Pearson Learning covering over 8,000 faculty, 41% of college professors use social media as a teaching tool, up from around 34% in 2012. Yellowdig is customized for classroom learning, hence we see much higher levels of student engagement compared to public social media tools,” said Founder & CEO Shaunak Roy.

Yellowdig has completed pilots in several top universities, including MIT, Wharton School and Columbia Business School before this public beta launch.

Instructors can simply register and start using the tool for free. Once they build sufficient engagement, they will be invited to an exclusive “Professor Influencer Network” that will be made up of top professors.

You can get started by registering at www.yellowdig.com
